Lansdowne Roof Steels – a feat of Engineering

Friday 23 January 2009
The first of the massive 4,000 tonnes of roof steel arrived recently at Lansdowne Road. Fabricated by Cimolai in Italy, they were transported by sea and delivered to site in December 2008 in preparation for erection in January 2009.

The first steels were successfully erected at dawn involving the expertise of all the engineering, construction and project management teams on site.
The unique design of the new stands and roof creates additional weather protected seating capacity without extending the roof over the pitch.  The roof itself has been designed to make the best use of the available sunlight which is as low as physically possible while being compatible with cross-stadium viewing.
Mechanical and Electrical services installation and block work have also started contributing to the shape of the structure.
The 50,000 seater stadium is on target for completion in April 2010.
