Devonshire Building, Newcastle University
The Devonshire Building, designed by Devereux Architects is home to the Institute for Environmental and Sustainability Research is a flagship development for Newcastle University which, in many ways, embodies a new approach to providing academic facilities.
The building brings together under one roof a number of ‘traditional’ physical sciences along with e-science and social sciences. The building provides laboratory and office space for many different departments and represents a cultural change in the university which is keen to encourage interaction and cross-flow of ideas across departments.
The building design embraces a ‘state of the art’ approach to sustainable design, in keeping with its environmental research function; and on 29th October 2003, the building became the first of its type to receive an excellent BREEAM rating, presented by Energy Minister Steven Timms.
