Genzyme - Biopharma Finishing Facility
Multinational biotechnology manufacturer Genzyme acquired an existing facility in Waterford, Ireland and developed it into state-of-the-art facility for biopharmaceutical finishing.
This multiphase manufacturing facility is now a Finishing Centre of Excellence within Genzyme. Developments to date have included:
Transforming an existing 11,000 SQM building into a tabletting suite to manufacture Renagel tablets for dialysis patients. PM provided commissioning and qualification services for this project
Phase 2 involved the establishment of a 6,000 SQM high quality biological/fill finish centre to support the growth of protein and antibody products manufactured by Genzyme. This facility is the European fill/finish centre for Genzyme’s enzyme replacement therapies for rare genetic diseases. Approval for commercial manufacture was achieved in early 2006. The Fill Finish project included a production building on three floor levels; a 2,500m² high bay warehouse; a central utilities building; a tank farm and 1600 m² of Grade B to Grade D cleanrooms. PM were appointed Construction, Commissioning and Validation Managers.
Phase 3 included the delivery of the OD2 secondary pharmaceutical finishing facility. This phase provided a State-Of-The-Art cGMP manufacturing facility with multi-product capability to support an increase in Renagel demand and provide space for future expansions to pharmaceutical finishing capacity. PM provided architectural and engineering design, construction management, qualification support and qualification services for this project
The scope of the current project includes a new 200 seat full-service cafeteria; a 4,700 m² four storey office block; a 1,900 m² extension to the QC Laboratory, and refurbishment of existing office areas. PM is the overall project manager for this expansion. We have direct responsibility for the civil/structural, mechanical/electrical, quantity surveying, cost control and LEED certification for the project.
PM has also worked with Genzyme on projects at its facilities in Geel, Belgium and Massachusetts in the USA.
